ENSO as a natural experiment to understand environmental control of meiofaunal community structure

چکیده
The mechanisms controlling abundance and biomass of meiofauna in marine sub-littoral systems are still poorly known. The structure of a meiobenthic community is the product of an intricate network of abiotic factors, which interact with biotic factors like food availability, intraand interspecific interactions and predation (Giere 1993). In spite of this inherent complexity, the temporal variation of meiobenthic communities in coastal systems might be quite predictable in relation to seasonal variation of primary production (i.e. food availability) and environmental conditions (e.g. temperature and oxygen) (Coull 1988; Giere 1993; Olafsson & Elmgren 1997). Nevertheless, there

Epilithic communities in a lake littoral zone: the role of water-column transport and habitat development for dispersal and colonization of meiofauna
During the past 30 y, periphyton has been recognized as a key component in the benthos of lake littoral zones. However, the role of meiofauna-sized organisms living in the periphyton and mechanisms regulating and influencing those communities largely have been neglected, and the process of community development and colonization pathways of periphytic meiofauna are unknown in lakes. We studied t...
متن کاملEnvironmental variables , pesticide pollution and meiofaunal community structure in two contrasting temporarily open / closed False Bay estuaries
Environmental variables (including natural and anthropogenic stressors) and meiobenthic communities were sampled in a ‘natural’ (Rooiels) and a ‘disturbed’ (Lourens) estuary in the Western Cape, South Africa, bimonthly for 20 months. A primary aim of the study was to assess if the meiobenthic community structure is driven by different variables when comparing ‘natural’ versus ‘disturbed’ system...
متن کاملتاثیرپذیری رخداد بیماری مالاریا در ایران از شاخص اقلیمی ENSO
Background and Objective: Malaria is a disease affecting 300–500 million people in tropical and subtropical regions and causes approximately 2.7 million deaths annually. Currently, no vaccine protects against malaria and resistance to anti-malaria drugs such as chloroquine is increasing and spreading geographically. Moreover, anti-malarial drugs are expensive and often unaffordable to low-incom...
متن کاملExperimental evidence of predation by juvenile flounder, Platichthys flesus, on a shallow water meiobenthic community.
In the northern Baltic Sea juvenile flounder, Platichthys flesus, occur in high abundances on shallow sandy bottoms in late summer and autumn. They feed mainly on meiofauna and the ontogenetic switch to macrofaunal sized food occurs at a larger size here than in other areas, exemplifying the high relative importance of meiofauna. Consequently, juvenile P. flesus in the Baltic feed for a longer ...
متن کاملEffects of copper mine tailings disposal on littoral meiofaunal assemblages in the Atacama region of northern Chile.
The effects of the disposal of copper mine tailings on the littoral meiofaunal assemblages of the Chañaral area of northern Chile were studied. Of the metals data collected, only in the case of copper was there a clear association with the tailings distribution in both the seawater and porewater samples, and it is assumed that the tailings on the beaches was the source of copper in the adjacent...
